Frequently Asked Questions

Reaching out for therapy can be overwhelming. Here are some answers to some common questions to help you get a sense of how we might work together and what to expect. If you have other questions or concerns, please reach out!

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. I'm in-network with Anthem and UnitedHealthcare, as well as Indiana Medicaid (Anthem Healthy Indiana Plan - HIP, Anthem Hoosier Healthwise, Anthem Hoosier Care Connect,  Traditional Medicaid, and UnitedHealthcare Hoosier Care Connect). My inclusion in your specific plan may vary, so please check with your insurance directly or reach out to me with questions.

Do you offer a sliding scale or reduced fee options?

Yes. I work with clients who don't have insurance on a sliding scale, as well as through Open Path Therapy Collective. Reach out to me for more information.

Do you offer virtual / telehealth sessions?

Yes! I offer virtual sessions for clients located in Indiana and Colorado, as well as in-person sessions at my Indianapolis / Broad Ripple office.

What ages do you work with?

I work with teens (ages 13+) and adults.

What if I'm unsure about starting therapy or if we'll be a good fit?

Feeling unsure is VERY common and appropriate. We can have a brief video or phone consultation (~15-30 minutes, free) for us to meet, discuss questions, and talk more about possibly working together.

What if we're not a good fit? When will we know and how will we navigate it?

We will try to identify this as early as possible, such as in an initial consultation or the first session. In my experience, we usually know within the first 3 sessions and if we're not a good fit for any reason (style, approach, your needs, outside of my training or expertise), we'll figure out a plan to connect you to the right next step or provider.

What can I do within the client portal?

Current clients can access the client portal here. Within it, you can:

  • View upcoming appointments and request an appointment.

  • Log into virtual appointments.

  • Complete documents and upload information.

  • View and pay balances and access receipts.

  • Send and receive messages.

  • Change appointment reminders and notifications.

What if you don't accept my insurance or I don't have insurance?

You are able to self-pay for services. If I am out-of-network for your insurance plan, I can provide receipts (superbills) for you to pursue reimbursement or the services applying to your annual deductible.

Does insurance pay for 100% of therapy sessions?

It can be complicated and will vary depending on your specific insurance plan, including your benefits and coverage, as well as your annual deductible. Call the number on the back of your insurance card or visit your insurance website to verify what you may have to pay for out of pocket.

How do I schedule a first appointment?

You can complete the appointment request form or reach out to me through phone 317-268-8220 (text/call) or email at craig@barefeathertherapy.com

What should I expect in our first session?

In our first session, we'll talk about what brings you to therapy, what you're hoping for, and whether we're a good fit. There's no pressure, and this is a chance for us both to see if working together makes sense.

What can or should I talk about in therapy?

Check out this page for common topics clients tend to reach out to me for support with. These are all themes I have or currently spend time on with clients.

How often do we meet? And for how long does therapy last?

Most clients start out in therapy meeting every week or every other week. Based on your feedback, progress, goals, changes, and many other factors, many clients reduce to meeting every 3-4 weeks, once a month, or as needed. Some take breaks from therapy for a few months and then might return. Some clients find therapy has been beneficial and wrap up after a handful of sessions, others may continue for a few months or benefit from meeting for longer periods of time. It depends, however we will not unnecessarily continue therapy if it's not useful or if you've met your goals.
